Richard J. Zalewski

January 25, 1956 — August 7, 2025

Feasterville-Trevose, PA

Richard “Rich” Zalewski, affectionately known as “Zeus” to his friends and “Butch” to his family, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2025. He was born on January 25, 1956, in the Fairmount Park section of Philadelphia, PA.

Rich was the eldest of three children born to the late Richard and Ann Zalewski. He shared a close bond with his younger siblings, his brother Jack (deceased), and his sister Ann Marie Teofilak.

Rich was married to Linda Dick (Sullivan), with whom he shared a loving family. He was a devoted father to Rich Zalewski and stepfather to Joseph Sullivan. He was also a proud and loving grandfather to Joseph Robert Sullivan.

Later in life, Rich shared a devoted 18-year relationship with his longtime partner, Linda Tartaglia (Austin). He built strong, loving bonds with her sons—the late Michael Austin and Matthew Austin—whom he cared for deeply and treated like his own. Rich also shared a special closeness with Linda’s extended family— siblings, nieces, and nephews— forming meaningful connections and bringing laughter and love into their lives.

As a child, Rich enjoyed playing half ball with friends and was a member of his school's football team. He had a passion and talent for drawing, and his teachers encouraged him to pursue art. However, due to his father’s declining health, Rich left school early to help care for his family. From a young age, he displayed a deep sense of responsibility and an unwavering commitment to those he loved.

Rich was a hard-working and dedicated family man with a strong work ethic. He rarely missed a day of work and never complained, despite the many responsibilities he carried. He found joy in simple pleasures—he loved to fish and hunt and took great pride in his skills as a machinist and carpenter. In the 1980s, he played a key role in building the 39th Police District Gym, which at the time was the only gym of its kind in the city.

An avid craftsman, Rich had a remarkable talent for transforming discarded wood into beautiful, hand-crafted furniture. He was also known for his skills in the kitchen and took pride in being an excellent cook.

Among the jobs he held throughout his life, Rich spent several years working for Rafa Window Company, where he installed countless windows in the Parkwood section of Philadelphia. He became well known for his expert skill and left a lasting impression on many.

Rich will be remembered not only for his dedication and craftsmanship but also for his sense of humor and ability to find laughter in almost any situation.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday, August 14, 2025, from 9:30 to 10:30 am and to attend Rich's Memorial Mass at 10:30 am, at St. Christopher's Catholic Church, 13301 Proctor Rd., Philadelphia PA 19116.

Interment will be held privately at a later date.
